Looking at the way the college basketball has been going, I've noticed that this season is providing with it's usual surprises and disappointments. Looking at the surprises, I've got...
Mississippi at 15-1(2-1) with their only loss being to Tennessee, Ole Miss has gotten some good wins on their belt. Ole Miss has wins against Winthrop, Clemson, and most recently Florida. This team is making a beeline for the NCAA Tourney and looks like a strong entry.
Drake 15-1 (6-0) with their only loss being to a strong Saint Mary's team that's going to give Gonzaga a run for their money in the West Coast Conference. Drake beat their lowly in-state rivals Iowa and Iowa State (winning this one by 35 points) and have also beaten the likes of Southern Illinois, Missouri State, and Bradley. Can Drake help the Mizzou Valley get 3 along w/ the next team on this list?
Illinois State 14-3 (6-0) Illinois State did take a loss to Eastern Michigan, but did play tough against Indiana. Creighton and Southern Illinois are among the list of victims on this team's list and Illinois State will need to add a few more to make the tourney as an at-large bid.
Baylor 14-2 (2-0) Baylor's only losses have come against Washington State and Arkansas. Baylor did get wins against Witchita State, Winthrop, and Notre Dame along w/ a win at South Carolina.
Dayton 14-2 (2-1) Dayton has been impressive this year, taking down Big East teams Pittsburgh and Louisville. Dayton lost early in the season to George Mason and a strong Massachusetts team later on, but they still look strong to get an at-large out of the Atlantic Ten
Rhode Island 15-2 (1-1) Another A-10 team making some noise. They did just pull one out against Duquense, winning by only 2, but were able to beat Syracuse on the rhode (get it?). A loss to Dayton doesn't hurt them too much at this point.
Among others that have surprised: Miami (FL), Kent State, West Virginia, South Alabama and Arizona State
Southern Illinois 8-9 (3-3) Southern Illinois may have a strong schedule, but a loss to Saint Louis wasn't what they had in mind. A pre-season top 25 team, So. Illinois will have to win the MVC conference tourney to make the NCAA tourney. A lot of promise for this team, but they have gone downward.
Kentucky 7-8 (1-1) Billy Gillispie didn't have this in mind when he moved from Texas A&M to Kentucky. The Wildcats losing prized recruit Alex Legion doesn't help either. The Wildcats were able to beat Vanderbilt, but have been unable to do much else. Surely a big disappointment
The entire WAC conference You'd think this conference was once again good for two bids. Well, Nevada has been way down and Utah State struggled in non-conference play. Two bids is very unlikely for this conference.
Illinois (9-9) (1-4) One word to describe their season so far, ugly. After Bruce Weber led Illinois to three straight great seasons, Illinois has gone downward. They've spun out so to speak. Quite frankly, their only highlight this year was getting Alex Legion to come play basketball there.
Other candidates: Maryland, USC, and Michigan
